The GMB - Britain's second largest public sector union - has responded to a demand from the Local Government Association that the Chancellor makes more money available from central government to keep local spending and local taxes down.

GMB National Secretary for Public Services Brian Strutton said:

"The LGA is right to ask for more money going into local government, but the reasons behind this demand from Bruce-Lockhart, a Tory, do not stand up. If money goes in, it needs to be wisely targeted and wisely spent. GMB members would want that to mean achieving equal pay, to mean meeting the cost of delivering school workforce reform, and to mean eradicating the very low pay many councils impose. These steps will deliver better value to local communities so it would be money well spent."
